Abstract

817,052. Carburetting gas. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW Ltd. Oct. 13, 1955 [Nov. 16, 1954], No. 33200/54. Class 55 (2). In a process for enriching a combustible gas the gas is contacted directly with an oil which contains a minor proportion of readily volatile constituents under conditions such that the volatile constituents are transferred to the gas, the gas being free of impurities, e.g. tar, which would be scrubbed from the gas and contaminate the residual oil. The oil may be a crude petroleum oil or a wash oil which has been used in gas debenzolizing or is being used for removal of naphthalene from the gas. The gas enriched may be blue water gas, a gas made by oxidizing methane, carburetted water gas or oil gas, the gas in the latter two cases being cooled and debarred before contact with the enriching oil. In the Figure, hot gas from a catalytic cracking chamber (not shown) is passed through scrubbers 11 and 13 in which it is sprayed with water and then through a scrubber 15 where it is sprayed with gas oil to remove naphthalene and finally into an enriching scrubber 17, crude petroleum oil being sprayed downwards over a packing such as Faschig rings. Oil from the base of the scrubber is drawn off through a settling tank 20 for use as gas-making oil or burner fuel for an oil-gas plant. In a modification scrubber 17 may be omitted and the wash oil in the naphthalene scrubber may have incorporated with it a volatile enriching medium such as light petroleum or a petroleum oil containing easily volatilized constituents.
