Abstract
In a method of producing long-distance supply gas, town gas or synthesis gas which has a low CO content, a carbonaceous fuel is gasified under pressure, e.g. 23 atmospheres, with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases, and with steam and/or CO2, and the resulting gas at the same pressure is contacted with a catalyst to convert CO in the gas to CO2 and hydrogen by reaction with steam in the gas, which is thereafter washed if necessary to reduce its CO2 content, and, after the gasification and before the conversion, the gas is subjected to a partial condensation with the addition of tar and/or oil, in addition to water to remove from it solid, liquid or polymerizable constituents which would adversely affect the catalyst employed for the conversion, while allowing appreciable quantities of oil and tar vapours to remain in the gas, mists and/or drops of liquid contained in the gas being removed therefrom before the gas is subjected to the conversion reaction. After the condensation the gas may be treated with a surface-active solid substance, e.g. in the form of a fluidized bed, which assists in removing the constituents at between 150 DEG and 500 DEG C., e.g. certain coals and cokes, silica gel, active argillaceous earth or chromium oxide on activated carriers. Whether so treated or not, the partially-condensed gas may be cooled by indirect heat exchange. The oil and tar obtained from the gas in the condensation may be returned into the pressure-gas producer to wet the solid fuels therein. Refined oil and tar from the converted gas may be utilized for partial cleaning of the crude gas. Tars, oils or mixtures thereof not originating from the method may be used for the condensation. The catalyst used may possess a hydrogenating effect. The gas leaving the condensing operation may be heated in counterflow with the out-going converted gas. The converted gas, by the addition of gases with higher calorific value and higher density, may be brought to the quality of long distance supply gas or town gas. Nitrogen or other inert gases with a higher density may be added to the introduced or converted gas or a mixture thereof.
