Abstract
397,640. Metal-heating furnaces. HALKETT, R., FELLS, H. A., and BROWN, J., c/o Sheffield Gas Co., Commercial Street, Sheffield. June 18, 1932, Nos. 17250 and 23366. [Class 51 (ii).] Gases, supplying.-A gaseous atmosphere which prevents the formation of scale on metals during heating is produced by cooling neutral combustion products, i.e. products containing no free oxygen or unburnt gas, to remove substantially completely the water vapour content. The last traces of water vapour remaining after cooling may be removed by the addition of a suitable reagent such as coal gas. In the apparatus shown applied to a pit furnace of the muffle type combustion products withdrawn from the heating chamber Fl by the flue A are passed through a multitubular cooler C which may serve for heating the air for combustion and thence into the muffle F. Coal or other gas supplied at G may induce a flow of combustion products through the system. Condensed water is removed by the trap T.
