Abstract

697,808. Furnace atmospheres. METALLURGICAL PROCESSES CO. Jan. 19, 1951 [Jan. 21, 1950], No. 1482/51. Class 51(ii) [Also in Group XI] In a direct fired heat treatment furnace, decarburization of ferrous metals and oxidation or scaling of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals is substantially prevented by introducing into the furnace chamber at a point near the burners a protective atmosphere containing lithium and forming a curtain of hydrocarbon gas or vapour between this point and the furnace charge so that the lithium containing waste gases pass through and react with the said curtain of hydrocarbon gas and from thence over or through the charge. The furnace comprises a refractory lined combustion chamber A fired by a burner or burners 15 and formed with a vertical throat 12 for the passage of combustion gases to a work support 13 said combustion chamber being supplied from a vaporizing tube 25 with an atmosphere of re-circulated combustion gases impregnated with lithium vapours and also supplied with a curtain of coal gas, natural gas, propane, or oil vapour from a series of inlets 41 disposed between the burners 15 and the work support 13. A pair of vents or flues 16 are provided above the work support 13 for the escape of combustion gases and a secondary flue 18 diverts these gases from a work opening 19: Combustion gases withdrawn from the combustion chamber A through a tube 66 pass in turn through a pre-cooler 67, a strainer 68, a heat exchanger 69, a re-circulating pump 71 and a valve 72 to the inlet 28, Fig. 5, of the vaporizing tube 25 disposed in an auxiliary furnace 20 fired by one or more burners 23. The tube 25 is closed by a pivoted cover 29 engaging a rod 37 attached to a boat 36 containing a mixture of three parts of lithium carbonate to two parts of lithium chloride the said boat 36 being disposed in that part of the tube 25 over the burner or burners 23. Specifications 519,931 and 619,039 are referred to.
