[Class 7 (ii)] [See also Groups II and XXVI] A filter 1 for the combustion air is mounted on the engine flywheel 2. The air passes between the spokes 6 of the flywheel to a chamber formed by an annular partition 16 fixed to the crank-case. The filter comprises sheets of fabric mounted on rings 21, which are held by springs 22 fixed to a detachable casing 13, the whole being retained by a nut 23 screwed on the main shaft. Dust is first separated from the air by drawing it through radial passages 3, 12 as indicated by the arrows. The passages 3 are formed by grooves in the flywheel and a detachable plate 9 having vanes forming the passages 12 ; the casing 13, which may contain a liquid or pasty material, e.g. oil, to encourage adhesion of the dust, is removable for cleaning as described above. The filter may be of frusto-conical or corrugated shape, or provided with radial or annular pleats. Cooling cylinders.-Vanes 5 on the flywheel draw air through the radiator 4.
