Abstract
An alloy contains at least 99 per cent of zinc, ,05 to ,60 per cent of nickel or cobalt or both and a small proportion of silicon not greater than that required to form a silicide or silicides with the nickel or cobalt or both. The alloy may also contain not more than ,9 per cent of cadmium, aluminium or lead. A zinc-nickel-silicon alloy may be prepared from a pre-alloy comprising 20 per cent of silicon and 80 per cent of nickel, such pre-alloy being subdivided by pouring into water and dissolved in zinc to form a secondary pre-alloy containing about 5 per cent of nickel: the latter pre-alloy is then added to molten zinc. The alloy is preferably formed by melting in an induction furnace. After casting, the alloy may be cold worked or hot worked at or above 350 DEG C.: thereafter, heating to 350-380 DEG C. does not seriously affect the grain size. The alloy may be used for engraving or lithographic sheets, for extrusion into rods or for rolling or drawing into wire. According to the Provisional Specification, up to 5 per cent of nickel may be comprised in the alloy, the silicon content being correspondingly increased: also in an alloy containing nickel and aluminium, the content of the latter should not exceed one half that of the former. After working, the alloy may be heated to 350-400 DEG C.
