Abstract

478,457. Making composite ingots, tubes, plates, foil, wire, &c. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Dec. 23, 1936, No. 35253. Convention date, Jan. 28. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Casting composite articles.-In order to make compound zinc aluminium articles as described in Specification 395,585 a sheet of aluminium has a coat of aluminium, alloyed with zinc, tin, &c., formed on one face and molten zinc is then cast against this face. A sheet of hot-rolled or well annealed and cleaned cold-rolled aluminium may be heated to above the melted point of zinc-aluminium eutectic and treated with zinc, tin, &c. The zinc may be molten or be melted by the heat of the sheet which is treated with zinc chloride or other oxide-removing flux before heating or abraded, as by means of a wire brush, after applying the zinc &c. One or more sheets may then be formed into an envelope or trough with the treated face inside, placed in a support or mould, which may be watercooled, and molten zinc poured in. When the billet has cooled to the rolling or annealing temperature of aluminium it is rolled or drawn into bars, tubes, plates, foil, wire, &c., cold rolling being employed if the consequent characteristics are desired. Zinc foil 2 or 3 tenthousandths of an inch in thickness and comprising 5 or 6 per cent of aluminium may be thus made. In place of pure metals alloys of aluminium and zinc may be used.
