[Class 75 (iii)] Means for shielding the flame of a continuously burning pilot-jet comprises a chamber through the base of which the jet extends, the top of the chamber being partially closed by a lip leaving an orifice of smaller area than the base through which the flame passes without touching the lip. The chamber is preferably provided with air inlets of smaller area than the flameissuing orifice. In one form, a cap 2, Fig. 1, having qn orifice 3 of circular or other shape, is fitted over the jet 5 by means of internal projections 6 forming intermediate air inlets. Alternatively, the lower end of the cap may be constructed to fit tightly on a jet provided with air inlet grooves or the lower edge may be serrated and inturned to engage the jet and a perforated spacing collar provided between the cap and jet. In a second form, a cap 2, Fig. 8, is fitted inside or outside a cup 13 on the jet provided with air inlets 15. The side wall of the cup may be dispensed with and the cap fitted on the base, and the jet may then consist of a plain tube screwed into the base. In the form shown in Fig. 12, the cap embraces the enlarged head 22 of the jet, air being admitted through lateral holes 23 or through grooves in the head in register with the serrated edge 11 of the cap. The cap may be detachably secured to the jet or cup by a screw-threaded, bayonet or other joint or by means of a spring clip or other fastening.
