[Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group XXV] An ordinary nut is converted into a lock - nut by indenting an annular groove in the end face and pressing the inner portion so separated by the groove towards the axis of the nut. A die 11 with a projecting ring 13 having inclined faces 17, 16 is forced into the upper face of an ordinary nut 10 to produce a groove 14 with inclined faces 19, 20, whereby the inner portion 22 of the thread is pressed toward the axis 21. The groove may be formed concentric or eccentric with the nut axis, and the inclinations of the surfaces 16, 17 are preferably different from each other.
