Abstract
Marine oils are rendered less liable to autooxidation by heating, preferably under pressure, in closed containers without access of air to 250 DEG C. or higher for at least 48 hrs. The treatment may be effected in stages, maybe at different temperatures, and the products may be used for soap making or, preferably after light hardening treatment, for making edible fats. In examples: (1) Cod-liver oil is heated under nitrogen in closed containers for 72 hrs. at 250 DEG C. (2) Whale oil is heated in an atmosphere of nitrogen to 260 DEG C. for 72 hrs.
