Abstract
Local anaesthetics for injection comprise an acid salt of an anaesthetic, epinephrin or an equivalent vaso-constrictor, an antioxidant, and a buffer salt so that the solution has a pH value between 5,7 and 7,0. In some cases an acid also is added. The preparations may be prepared as stable solutions or as dry mixtures to be dissolved in water. Sodium chloride may be added to give an isotonic solution. The specific gravity should be above 1,0093, preferably it should be 1,011 or more. According to one example the solution contains procaine hydrochloride, disodium phosphate, di-hydrogen potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, sodium bisulphite, phosphoric acid, and epinephrin. The phosphates and phosphoric acid in this mixture, serving as buffers, may be replaced by sodium and potassium tartrates with tartaric acid; or the acetates with acetic acid; or the citrates with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid; or disodium phosphate with nitric acid; or mono-, di-, and tri-sodium phosphate with potassium acid phosphate and phosphoric acid; or carbonates of sodium, potassium, and calcium with hydrochloric acid. Nitrate or sulphate of procaine may be used in place of the hydrochloride.
