Abstract
425,541. Self-closing valves. MASON, H. L., 103, King Henry's Road, South Hampstead, London. Aug. 15, 1933, No. 22784. [Class 135] A self-closing valve has the valve member formed with a bullet-shaped part adapted to cooperate with a substantially cylindrical passage in the valve seat and remain within said passage when the valve is partly or fully open, so as to provide a constricted passage at the lower end leading to a passage of gradually increasing sectional area. In the form shown, the valve member proper comprises a cylindrical member 1 adapted to move into or out of engagement with a cylindrical packing ring held in position by a cage 3. To reduce turbulence the under-part of the valve member may be rounded as shown at 1<a>. To prevent concussion the valve actuating spindle is formed with a piston 2 working in a dashpot cylinder 5 to which pressure is admitted through a passage 7 leading to axial ports at the base of the bullet-shaped part, the upper end of the passage being screened by the sleeve 9 as the valve closes. The spindle is packed by a stuffing-box 4. Modifications of this fitting are described. Specification 303,770, [Class 135], is referred to in the Complete Specification and Specification 391,883 in the Provisional Specification.
