Abstract

Bacterial toxins for subcutaneous and like injection are incorporated in a fine emulsion of a fatty oil or fat so as to be adsorbed on the dispersed particles of the oil or fat. The toxin may be added to the emulsion or the oil &c., may be emulsified in an aqueous medium containing the toxin. The diameter of the oil particles in the emulsion is preferably about 1/2 m , and should not exceed 1 1/2 m , and the emulsion may be made by means of the apparatus described in Specification 323,534, [Class 81 (i)], operating at a pressure of 3000 to 4000 lbs., per sq. inch. Endotoxins for use in the process may be prepared by a preliminary passage of a suspension of bacteria through the emulsifier so as to disrupt the bacteria and release the toxins; alternatively the bacteria may be disrupted by other mechanical means, or solutions of bacteria prepared according to Specification 425,216 may be used. The emulsion may be one containing from 5 to 30 per cent of olive oil emulsified by means of sodium carbonate and oleic acid or by means of gum acacia; it may be adjusted to pH 7,4 to 8,0, and may be sterilized at 60 DEG C. Phenol may be added to the continuous phase or to the finished emulsion. Specification 417,715 also is referred to.
