Abstract

Anti-anaemia preparations are obtained by treatment of crude aqueous or alcoholic extracts with an adsorbing agent in a neutral or slightly acid medium and separation of the active substance from the adsorbate by treatment with a dilute alkaline solution. Suitable adsorbents are fuller's earth, bentonite, silica gell, active charcoal. According to an example minced liver is extracted with water and 10 ccs. of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 40 grams of fuller's earth are added for each litre of filtrate. The adsorbent is separated, washed and suspended in a mixture of water, pyridine and methylalcohol. The mixture is filtered and concentrated at a low temperature, residual pyridine being removed by ether, and the extract-reconcentrated. Protein substances may be removed from the product by the addition of alcohol, filtering and reconcentrating.
