Abstract

507,376. Antipoliomyelitis serum. WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY. May 26, 1938,' No. 15795. Convention date, May 29, 1937. [Class 81 (i)] A serum effective against the virus of poliomyelitis is obtained by immunizing an animal by successive injections of poliomyelitis virus fortified with products of metabolism of intestinal bacteria and obtaining a serum from the blood of the animal. Material for fortifying the virus may for example comprise the endotoxins from strains of typhoid, paratyphoid and coli bacteria, together with the exotoxins from the growth of these strains in glucose broth. A solution of the virus in normal saline with which the fortifying material is to be admixed may be obtained by adsorbing the virus on aluminium hydroxide gel and eluting the adsorbed virus.
