Abstract

424,450. Road - vehicle couplings. WILLETTS, E. H., 3524, 87th Street, Jackson Heights, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. Feb. 7, 1934, No. 4048. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1933. [Class 79 (iii)] A coupling and supporting member for a semi-trailer vehicle is adapted either to be collapsable on the trailer or to be detachable therefrom, so that the trailer can be stored or parked in less space than if the coupling were left in the position occupied when in use. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the trailer 12 is supported at one end on wheels 14 and at the other by a coupling 21 on a turntable 11 on the tractor 10. The coupling comprises a king-pin 16 fitting in a socket on the tractor and carried by a plate 17 fixed to a frame 18 rotatably mounted on a bar 31 sliding in vertical guides 20 fixed to the trailer. The outer end of the frame 18 is also connected to the trailer by links 21. The coupling is locked in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by pins 32 inserted in holes above the frame 18. To fold the coupling to the position shown in Fig. 4 the bar 31 is raised by screw-and-nut gear 23, 30 operated by a handle 34. In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the coupling frame 36, 37 is a rigid structure having four tapered lugs fitting into sockets 35 on the trailer and secured therein by spring-loaded bolts 40 connected at their inner ends to crank pins 42 on a disc 43. When the coupling is to be removed the disc 43 is rotated by a handle 44 so as to withdraw the bolts from the lugs and set the coupling free.
