Abstract
424,360. Mercury switches. KELLENDORFER, R., 60, Lothstrasse, Munich, Germany. Nov. 3, 1933, No. 30598. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury cut-out comprises a transparent insulating tube b having flush with its ends metal caps c, the space thus formed being partly filled with a conducting liquid f such as mercury and containing a small amount of gas p. The parts band c are mounted in a second transparent tube a to which are sealed conducting end caps e. Electrical connection is made between the caps c and the end caps e either by springs or by a bead of mercury d thus allowing a little for expansion. The caps c are screw threaded internally or are fitted with coiled springs to provide a frictional engagement with the conducting liquid to prevent disengagement of the liquid by slight shocks. On overload, the amount passing through the thread f causes it to vaporize and the gas buffer p is displaced thus rupturing the thread f. To reset, the cut-out is shaken or knocked, bringing the conducting liquid down to the position shown.
