Abstract
430,482. Fusible cut-outs. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Rawlins, H. L. ; 710, Coal Street, Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Feb. 18, 1935, No. 5238. Convention date, March 30, 1934. [Class 38 (i)] In a circuit-breaker comprising a tubular lining 21 of material such as boric acid, which evolves an arc-extinguishing gas when in proximity to an arc, and a central conducting rod 31 which on rupture of a fuse element 43 draws the arc through the tube 21 under action of a spring 41, the rod 31 has an insulating extension 33 which for small-magnitude arcs is drawn into the tube 21 to force the arc into close engagement with the gas-producing material. For large-magnitude arcs, the extension 33 is' disconnected owing to melting of the reduced portion 39 by the heat of the arc. The extension 33 may be of ceramic material, fibre, &c. according to the place of use or may be of gasproducing material such as boric acid in which case a reinforcing member 51 screwing into cap 47 is employed.
