Abstract
Refractory materials are made by crushing and mixing diatomaceous earth and slag, incorporating calcium carbonate and sodium chloride with the mixture to form a binder, moistening the product, pressing into the required shape, and subjecting the compressed mass to heat treatment to bind the constituents together and to evaporate excess moisture. Glucose is preferably incorporated as a temporary binding agent serving to keep the compressed mass in shape before the permanent bonding is effected. According to an example, 90 to 95 per cent of crushed slag is mixed with 10 to 5 per cent of calcium carbonate, the mixture incorporated in a proportion of 10 to 15 per cent with 90 to 85 per cent of calcined diatomaceous earth, approximately 5 per cent of the total of sodium chloride and 2 1/2 per cent of water being finally added. The pressed mass in the form of blocks is heated first with steam under 100 pounds pressure for about 8 hours to affect the bonding, and finally subjected to dry heat to evaporate excess moisture.
