Abstract

423,165. Batteries. MACCALLUM, F., 307, Washwood Heath Road, and REDFERN, A. H., Beverley Works, Alma Street, both in Birmingham. April 28, 1933, No. 12367. [Class 53] A battery consists of zinc and carbon plates with intervening layers of electrolyte and depolarizer arranged in the form of a sandwich, the edges of the battery being sealed with a thin elastic and waterproof skin applied by dipping, spraying or brushing. Rubber may be used for this purpose and several layers may be used alternating with layers of varnish, the outer layer consisting of a binder of any thickness. The varnish and binder may consist of an organic gum or resin with rubber, tar, bitumen, &c. The binder may be applied by placing the battery with the elastic skin applied in a container which is then filled with the binder. The rubber solution used for sealing may contain vulcanizing agents. The Provisional Specification states that the layers of electrolyte and depolarizer may be made by forcing the materials from separate containers through a slot-shaped nozzle. The ribbons so formed are superposed to form a tablet the edges of which may be coated with bituminous paint or a quick-drying dope. The electrolyte and depolarizer may alternatively be applied to open mesh tape or fabric, and the cells may be formed with spaces to receive a small quantity of liquid electrolyte.
