394,046. Galvanic batteries. BOISIER, F., Ecole d'Arts & Metiers, Erquelines, Belgium, and LIZARRALDE, A., Villa Lizarralde, San Sebastian, Spain. Jan. 20, 1932, No. 1805. Convention date, July 20, 1931. [Class 53.] A storage battery having electrodes of carbon and zinc, aluminium or cadmium is provided with an electrolyte consisting of a solution of an iodide such as zinc iodide to which a small quantity of zinc chloride or bromide may be added. A single cell may comprise a carbon rod surrounded by a zinc cylinder, the intervening space being filled with cotton or other absorbent for the zinc iodide solution. An outer casing of cardboard, celluloid, &c., may be provided if the zinc cylinder is open at the bottom, or the zinc may be closed at the bottom and form the outer container. Several cells may be placed in compartments in a box to form a battery. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which zinc and carbon plates 18, 19 secured in a frame 20 enclose a space filled with absorbent material saturated with zinc iodide. Cells are joined in series by placing one upon another. Fig. 7 shows a further modification in which zinc sheets 12 have superposed carbon plates 14 separated by a layer of varnish. The electrodes are placed horizontally in a container filled with electrolyte.
