Abstract

Water-soluble metal albumen tannin ester compounds are prepared by dissolving tannin esters other than acetyl tannin esters, which still contain free phenol groups and are saponifiable at ordinary temperature by normal sodium carbonate only with difficulty, in such a quantity of aqueous alkali or alkaline-reacting alkali salt that the solution is still weakly acidic, and treating with aqueous metal albumen solutions. The compounds are used therapeutically in solution or powder form. In examples: (1) Benzoyl tannin is made by heating a mixture of tannin, natrium benzoicum, and benzoic anhydride in a water bath, diluting largely with water, filtering, washing, and vacuum drying at 30--40 DEG C. A solution of the benzoyl tannin in sodium carbonate is added to an aqueous solution of argentum proteinicum and the solution evaporated. (2) Casein is boiled with caustic soda solution, filtered, and nitric acid added as long as the initial precipitate redissolves. To the solution gold chloride is added, the product then being heated to about 90 DEG C. until a clear solution is obtained which is cooled, dialysed, and the gold albumen compound vacuum dried. A concentrated solution of the product is treated with benzoyl tannin in sodium carbonate solution and the product dried in vacuo. (3) Bismuth albumen benzoyl tannin is made as in (2) using a solution of bismuth nitrate to which mannite is added. (4) Tannin and concentrated lactic acid are heated to give lactyl tannin which is dissolved in sodium carbonate and argentum proteinicum in water added. The product is vacuum dried. (5) Tannin is added to a dried methyl alcohol solution of acetyl salicylic acid and the mixture refluxed. The solvent is evaporated and the product washed with ether and water. A solution of the acetyl salicyl tannin in sodium carbonate is treated with a solution of argentum proteinicum and the product dried in vacuo. A prior proposal to make a soluble silver albumen tannin compound by treating diacetyl tannin dissolved in alkali with an aqueous solution of albumose silver albumen is referred to. p
