Abstract

Lubricants consisting of hydrocarbon oils or greases are treated to improve their film strength &c., by addition of small proportions of organic compounds containing chlorinated or brominated alkyl or aryl groups. Suitable substances are chlorinated esters of mono-, di-, or poly-hydric alcohols, particularly those of fatty acids, such as chlorinated animal or vegetable oils, methyl, ethyl or phenyl stearate, ethyl or butyl oleate, or ethyl palmitate chlorinated alcohols, aldehydes, and p acids of the aromatic or aliphatic series, such as stearic, oleic or hydroxy fatty acids, or naphthenic acids, such as are obtained by oxidation of petroleum oil. Further examples are:--(1) the compounds prepared by condensing together by the Friedel-Craft reaction, chlorinated stearic acid and diphenylene oxide or naphthalene, or other aromatic hydrocarbon, which may be chlorinated in such proportions that the product contains chlorine; (2) the product prepared by condensing a chlorinated fatty acid with itself by means of alkaline condensing agents such as sodium ethoxide; (3) the product prepared by treating chlorinated paraffin wax with a condensing agent such as sodium ethoxide. Examples of bromine compounds which may be used are bromomethyl stearate, dibromo-olein, and dibromo-oleic acid. Small proportions of primary secondary, or tertiary amines may be added to the lubricants.
