Abstract
422,538. Rectilinear-motion bearings. HARLEY, S. J., Long Bend, Old Leamington Road, Stivichall, Coventry. July 12, 1934, No. 20420. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1933. [Class 12 (i)] To facilitate precision movements between a heavy upper member a, such as a headstock, and a lower member b, either a V-section rib a<1> or a plain bearing surface a<2> or both, on the upper member, usually supported by co-operating plain bearing surfaces, are supported by rollers c mounted in the lower member so as to be rotatable about axes parallel to the supported surface and normal to the direction of relative movement. Fig. 1, shows the surface a<2> only, supported by rollers c on spindles c<1>. The rollers are arranged in a groove or pockets b<2> which serve as oil baths. The rib a' is supported in a V-groove b<1>. In a modification, the sides of the V-groove bl are grooved or recessed to receive supporting rollers also.
