Abstract
Dispersions of normally insuluble substances are obtained by the use as dispersing agents of alkyl derivatives of guanidines in which the alkyl group contains at least eight carbon atoms, and their salts. Suitable derivatives include the octyl, decyl, and dodecyl guanidine salts and the corresponding tetra- and hexadecyl compounds. Further alkyl groups may also be introduced into dodecyl-guanidine, and substitution may also be made in the alkyl radicle, e.g. the radicle CH2.CH2.NH.CO.C1OH21 may be introduced into the guanidine molecule. The aqueous solutions of the salts are not precipitated by electrolytes and are stable with respect to lime and magnesia. Normally insoluble substances which can be dispersed include oils, fats, waxes, solid and liquid hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, organic solvents insoluble in water and powders such as dyestuffs.
