Chemically neutral austenitic chromium-nickel steels containing 6-40 per cent of chromium, 40-4 per cent of nickel and up to 0,5 per cent of carbon are mechanically worked at a temperature below 950 DEG C., and then heated at from about 600 to 900 DEG C. for a sufficient time to cause the carbide particles precipitated from the mass to close up to coarse complexes. The working may consist of rolling or forging at 500-950 DEG C. In an example, an alloy steel containing 0,11 per cent of carbon, 8,94 per cent of nickel and 18,05 per cent of chromium is rolled at a temperature below 950 DEG C. and then heated for 10 hours at 750 DEG C.
