Abstract

420,499. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen ; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) July 30, 1934, No. 22194. Convention date, Sept. 7, 1933. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A device having a discharge in a tubular envelope which does not fill the whole crosssection of the envelope, such as a high-pressure discharge device, and operated in a position inclined to the vertical has one or more coils in series with the device so arranged that the magnetic field of the coils tends to deflect the discharge in a direction opposed to that in which the convection currents tend to deflect it. The coils are preferably iron-cored chokes and may entirely replace the normal ballast impedance. In one form, four chokes are arranged in series with each other and with the tube and are mounted at equal intervals above the tube, which is horizontal. In a modification, the chokes are below the tube and are wound in the opposite direction. The tube may be a lamp with a metal vapour filling and self-heating thermionic electrodes. A ballast impedance, if used, is mounted remote from the tube.
