Abstract

406,620. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Patent - Treuhand - Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen ; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) Oct. 26, 1933, No. 29703. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] Means to facilitate starting in electric discharge tubes with thermionic electrodes comprise one or more wires extending along the interior of the tube, enclosed for the greater part of their length in insulating sheaths by which they are supported, and having free ends which serve as auxiliary electrodes or as supports for conductors forming such electrodes. In the example shown a helical wire 11 is enclosed by a thin glass sheath 12 which is held in the tube by semi-circular clips 13. The free ends 14, 14<1> of the spiral project from the sheath and act as auxiliary electrodes. When the supply is switched on, glow discharges occur between the thermionic electrodes 6, 6<1> and the ends 14, 141 of the wire, thus ionizing the gas and initiating the main discharge. The electrodes 7, 7<1> are of a sintered mixture of tungsten, barium oxide and strontium oxide. In a modification, applicable to very long tubes, the wire is broken in the middle and the free ends thus formed project out of the sheaths and form two further auxiliary electrodes. Specification 405,514 is referred to.
