Dec. 4, 1929, No. 37227. Convention date, June 29. [Class 39 (i).] Electrodes for glowdischarge lamps and rectifiers comprise a rigid core or rod of electron-emitting substance having httle or no electrical conductivity when cold and a metal member partially enclosing the core or passing therethrough to protrude into the discharge space. The metal is connected to the lead-in wire and an exposed part of the metal is the seat of a preliminary discharge when a starting voltage is applied. This discharge heats the metal and the adjacent part of the core, which then emits electrons and takes part in the discharge. The metal may comprise a sleeve 4 or coating extending up to the front end of the core 5, or a wire helix 9, Fig. 4, or wire gauze about a transverse core 5. In modifications, the metal comprises one or more wires 10, Fig. 5, passing through the core 5. The ends of the wires 10 may be bent over against the core and the lead 3 may be protected from discharges by a magnesium oxide or quartz sleeve 11. The core 5 may be moulded about the wire 10 or perforated to receive the wire. In all forms, the core 5 is made by pressing and sintering oxides or silicates of alkali, alkaline earth or rare earth metals, for example, of potassium, sodium, caesium, rubidium, calcium, barium, strontium, thorium, cerium, lanthanum and didymium. The tube 1, Fig. 1, may be transparent to ultra-violet rays and filled with common gas such as nitrogen or rare gas or mixtures.
