Abstract
419,936. Starting prime movers. DELCO-REMY CORPORATION, 239, East 1st Street, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Dyer, J. B. ; 323, Taylor Street, Pendleton, Indiana, U.S.A.) Feb. 17, 1933, No. 4962. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1932. [Class 38 (iv).] A control system for an internalcombustion engine and an associated starting motor comprises an accelerator pedal or equivalent throttle-actuating element which is incapable of exercising any load-controlling function but is adapted, when the engine is not running, to cause operation of the starting motor, the sta rting-motor control exercised by the accelerator pedal being disabled when the engine is running. In one form, Fig. 1, a starting-motor 10 of the screwed-pinion type is connected to the battery 17 through an electromagnetic switch C. The winding 21 of the switch C is in series with an ignition switch A and with a switch B operated by the accelerator pedal 49. The switch B comprises a contact 36 carried by a fixed insulating block 37 and a contact 31 carried by an insulating block 30 mounted in a sleeve 32, which is slidable in a sleeve 33 mounted on the rod 34 connected to the carburetter throttle, and is actuated from the pedal 49 through a piston 43 and a light spring 47. When the engine is running, the switch C is opened by the counter voltage set up by an engine-driven generator 25a having a brush connected by a wire 51 to the fixed contact 40 of the ignition switch, so that closure of the switch B by the accelerator pedal is prevented from energizing the starting motor. In modifications, (1) the electromagnetic switch C is replaced by a switch adapted to be opened by the action of engine suction on a diaphragm carrying the movable contact, and the ignition switch controls only the ignition system ; (2) the switch C is replaced by a switch E, Fig. 3, controlled conjointly by current from an engine-driven generator and by engine suction acting through a conduit 144 on a diaphragm 130; and (3) the electromagnetic switch C is arranged in series with a switch controlled by engine suction, instead of controlling the switch C by current from an engine-driven generator.
