June 18, 1934, No. 18027..[Class 44.] In an exchangeable trustee lock detachably secured to pins 15, 16 on the safe door 17 by a hand-operable slide 14 engaging grooves in the pins, the slide is locked against movement by a tumbler 22 pivoted at 29 and biassed by spring 27 to engage a pin 23 on the tumbler in one or other of two branches 24, 25 of a U-form slot 26 in the slide. Tumbler 22 is releasable by a changing key 35 inserted in keyhole 7 and engaging a tumbler aperture 28 having a shoulder 36 limiting movement of the key, which is rotatable anticlockwise, Fig. 5. The lock has an attendant's bolt 2 blocked by a tenant's bolt 5. The bolt 5 is shaped so that when shot its end 5<d> lies close to the pin 34 on which key 35 works so that the bolt cannot be fully shot with the changing key in place and the key cannot be fully inserted when the bolt is shot. Bolt 5 is locked by two sets of tumblers 8, 9 co-operating with pins on the bolt. The pin 31 co-operating with tumblers 9 overlies a projection on, or enters a recess in, tumbler 22 so that the tumbler cannot be released unless the tenant's bolt 5 is retracted. The key 10 operating tumblers 8, 9 and bolt 5 is inserted in a keyhole 11 and can only be removed when the bolt is in shot position. The attendant's bolt 2 is locked by a single set of tumblers 6 and is operated by an attendant's key, which is inserted in the keyhole 7, and can be removed with the bolt either shot or retracted. The bolt has a pin 32 which, when bolt 2 is retracted, engages a recess 33 in tumbler 22 so that the tumbler cannot be released unless bolt 2 is shot. Removal of the lock can only be effected by the use of the three keys, and the door must have been opened and bolt 2 again shot. The attendant's key can only rotate clockwise, Fig. 5, and so cannot be used to release tumbler 22. The slide 14 is operable, when released, by a finger-piece 14<a>, and can only be removed from the casing when in released position with recesses 20 in register with extensions 19 of the end of the casing which overlap the edges of the slide. Thus if the screws holding in place the cover-plate and mechanism of the lock have been removed the lock may still be securely held in place as the slide is not removable from the casing in the locking position. Various modifications are mentioned. Inter alia the tumbler 22 may be movable in the same direction as tumblers 6, the changing and attendant's keys being correspondingly modified, the tumbler 22 may be slidable, and two or more tumblers 22 may be provided, in which case pin 23 would be arranged on the slide 14, and slots such as 26 provided in the tumblers. The tumbler 22 may itself be locked by additional tumblers. The tumblers 6, 8, 9 shown are without springs, but spring tumblers may be used. Tumbler 22 may be independent of bolt 2, pin 32 and recess 33 being omitted.
