Locks, revolving-barrel; lock-mechanism, masterkey.-Barrel locks with tumblers operated by axial insertion or by rotation of a key are constructed in series, each lock being operated by a master key or by a key that will not operate other locks in the series. Some of the locks of different series are also operable by a master key. Figs. 1 and 2 show a lock with a fixed casing 1 having opposing slots 2 and a rotary cylinder 3 having a central slot in which plate tumblers 5 are arranged, each tumbler being normally projected by a spring 6 into a slot 2 for locking, and provided with a slot 7 through which a key 8 is inserted to withdraw the tumblers into the cylinder 6, whereupon the key and cylinder can be turned to actuate a bolt by means of a lug 12 on the end flange 9 of the cylinder. The operative projections on the key of a given lock of a series act to withdraw the lower ends of the tumbler's flush with the cylinder and releases only that lock. The tumblers do not extend across the cylinder, and may be withdrawn further by a master key for the series. Additional similar tumblers 13 common to a screw may be interposed between the tumblers 5 for operation by projections on the other edge of the key. In a modification, one edge of the key may carry two side-by-side sets of projections operating two parallel sets of tumblers. In another modification, each of the tumblers 5, Fig. 5, formed with a cam surface 14 to project a divided spring plunger 16 so as to bring the division on the surface of the cylnder 3. The cam 14 is extended into a bearing surface 18 in some of the tumblers to suit the particular key. In a further modification, two sets of tumblers moved in opposite directions by a rotary key acts on two sets of spring-pressed divided pins in the manner shown in Fig. 5. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes another form, adapted for release by rotation of the key, in which the tumblers 19, 20, Fig. 8 (Cancelled), comprise pivoted spring-controlled levers provided respectively with a lug 21 and recess 22 which are engaged to release the locking-mechanism by rotation of the key 8. Or a rotary key may operate pivoted spring-controlled levers of the usual type. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
