CYLINDER-LOCK CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
Application filed June 9, 1914. Serial No. 843,924.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY G. VOIGI'IT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gylinder-Lock Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a cylinder lock construction affording a variety of controls through the possible combinations of lock and key construction. a
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferableembodiment of the invention Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through a cylinder lock constructed in accordance with the present invention, a first control key inserted therein. Fig. 2 is an end elevationof the part shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse verticalsection on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig.4 is an end elevation of a cylinder lock with the main roll back, giving a quarter revolution and with the auxiliary roll back in its projected position. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section through the cylinder lock, with a key of another control inserted therein. Fig. 6 is a plan of certain keys cooperating with the inner plug of the cylinder lock. Fig. 7 is a plan of certain keys cooperating with both the inner and outer plug of the cylinder lock.
In a generic sense, the invention provides inner and outer rotatable plugs of. the usual type, controlled by the usual pin tumbler mechanism, the inner of these plugs fixedly carrying a roll back or cam member of a particular construction and this inner plug having a limited movement relative to and independently of the outer plug, both plugs being rotatable together through certain keys. This fixed cam carries an auxiliary and relative movable cam, which has at least two relative positions, as far as the fixed cam and inner plug are concerned, and is normally held in one of these two positions, but is moved from said position to its second position by means of certain keys.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the usual cylinder lock casing and 2, an inner plug rotatably mounted therein.
3 designates an outer plug inclosing the inner plug 2 and eccentric relative thereto.
. Both the inner and outer plugs 2 and 3 are provided with the usual bores therein, in
which are mounted the usual pin tumblers 4t designed to be so positioned by the keys hereinafter referred to, that these pins will be positioned by differently bitted keys, with their ends in the line of break between the inner and outer plug and between the outer plug-and the casing respectively, so that in the first instance the inner plug alone may be rotated and so that in the second instance, both the inner and outer plugs may be rotatcd together. The inner plug is provided with the usual key slot 5 therein. The end of the inner plug 2 is extended beyond the casing 1 and has rigidly seated thereon, a roll-back or cam 6, so that when the inner plug rotates this cam 6 will rotate withsaid plug. The rear face of the outer plug 3 is provided with an arcuate slot 7 therein, forming substantially a semi-circle and the cam. 6 has rigidly connected thereto and projecting from its forward face a pin 8 riding in said slot 7 and limiting the independent movcment of the inner plug to a half turn or semi-circle, giving a quarter turn movement in either direction. The roll-back G is secured to the inner plug by suitable means such as the screws shown, (see Fig. 2) and has its rear face slotted and grooved to provide channels for guiding a sliding plate 9 at the outer face of the cam 6. This plate 9 carries at its upper end an offset head 10 formingian auxiliary rollback or cam movable. relative to the fixed cam 6 and to the plug. Rcarwardly of the plate 9 the main cam 6 is recessed to provide a spring, chamber 11 into which a pin 12 carried by the plate 9 extends. A. coiled.
spring 13 is seated in this spring chamber 11 and bears againstthe pin 12 normally forcing the plate 11 downwardly, so that its lower edge shown at 9 in Fig. 1 is in the line of the key hole slot 5. The specific construction of the fixed cam 6 and the auxiliary and movable cam 10, per 80, forms no part of the present invention and is disclosed and claimed in a prior Patent No. 1,093,811, dated April 21st, 1914. By applying this special cam construction to the inner of two plugs of a cylinder lock, and by giving this inner plug a limited movement independently of the outer plug, a large number of controls may be secured through such a cylinder lock mechanism.
In Fi l of the drawings, a short key lettered h typifies a class of keys designed to co'riperate with the tumbler mechanism so that the inner plug alone may be rotated, (though for a limited movement) with the second or auxiliary cam in its normal spring pressed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This key A may be such as is fitted for one particular look only, while a second key A (Fig. 6) may be bittcd to perform the same functions but to operate, for instance, with a series of cylinder locks such, for instance, as all the locks on one floor. movement may be obtained by utilizing a third key such as A (Fig. 6) which is a long key engaging the lower end 9 of plate 9, and moving said plate and therefore second cam 10, from the position shown in Fig. 2, to that shown in Fig. 4. This key A may be bitted so as to rotate the inner plug only and so that the main cam 6 and auxiliary cam 10 may be rotated in such position only a quarter turn as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
It will be seen that when the inner plug alone is rotated, it has a limited movement. By utilizing a series of keys bitted to move the pin tumblers so as to break on the line between the outer plug 3 and the casing 1, still further controls may be secured. For instance, a key B, (Fig. 7) which is a short key, may be bitted to so rotate the inner and outer plugs in unison so that the cam arm 6 may be given a complete revolution to afford a further control of a lock mechanism. As this key B is a short key, the auxiliary cam 10 will be in its normal spring pressed position during this complete revolution of the main cam 6. A. long key B however, may be provided which will engage the edge 9 of plate 9 and move the auxiliary camlO to its second position. This key B may be bitted to retate both the inner and outer plugs in unison so that a still further control may be secured through the new position of the second or auxiliary cam 10.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a cylinder lock construction, such as de scribed, will provide through the cylinder lock itself, a variety of positions for the operating mechanism of said lock so that the bolt operating mechanism of the lock case may be controlled thereby in a variety of ways. So far as the operating means for this bolt mechanism is concerned, that, of course, forms no part of the present invention and can be varied in structure to suit the requirements in different cases. Fur thermore, while a particular embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein, it will be understood that structurally, the invention is susceptible of various embodiments within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
