rlhis invention relatesto lock and more particularly to a door lock adapted for use in connection with :lysate deposit compartment door, or the like, which requires two keys forv its operation. lt is an object ot' the invention to provide an improved lock of this character which. is simple and etifective. y
A particular `object ol' the invention is to provide a lock ot the character above set forth which can only be opened by the use of a main key and a guard key and troni which the ouard key can not be removed until the main key is removed; it being' possible however, to lock the door with the main key only.

T he construction herein so tar described is more or less common to devices of this character and it will be understood how movement of the tail piece 24 by engagement of the arm 38 with the shoulder 35 will cause 'withdrawal oli' the bolt 14 from the aperture 16m keeper 15, and will thereby allowytbe door 10 to be opened. The particular' arrangement and number of tumblers, etc., herein set forth is merely typical and it will be understood that the invention is not in any way limited or restricted to Vsuch arrangen'ient or number oi' tumblers, etc., but may be embodied in a variety of locks arranged to be operated by two keys. f The tumbler 20 which is adjacent to the y tail piece 24 is not actuated by the main key 19 'but can only be moved by the guard key 21. kThe guard key 21 is adapted to be inserted in the slot 38 rotatable key post 39 and when in place in the key post it may l he rotated with the key postv so` as to engage and move arm 40 which extends from the tumbler 20. In Fig. 3 it is clearly shown how the guard 21 engages the arm 40 of tumbler 20 and it will be readily understood how a suficient amount or movement of the 'tumbler in the direction indicated by the arrow in F 2 will cause the slot 30 in it to be brought in line with the stump 31. The spring 26 in connection with the tumbler 2O normally keeps it in the position shown in Fig. 2 and thereby makes it impossible toA bring the slots 29 and 80 into line with each other and the stump 31 with the use of a single key. Movement of the tail piece 24 in the direction `indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 `causes withdrawal or retraction of the bolt 14 from the aperture 16 in keeper 15 thereby allowing the door 10 to be opened.
TVhen the main keyf19 is inserted in the groove 27 in key post 28 tumbler 42 carried in the outer portion or' the key post 28 is depressed or moved outwardly bythe back edge 43 or the key. The tumbler 42 engages a lever 44 pivotally connected at-45 to the key post 28, and is normally moved so as to extend into the. slot 27 by a suitablev spring 46 arranged in connection with the lever 44 as clearly shown` in Fig. 3. Arm
47 of lever 44 engages arm 48 of bellcrank 49 which is pivot-ally mountedat 50 inthe casing and actuation, or depression, of the plunger 42 by the key" 19 allows the spring 51, in connection with the bell crank 49, to move the bell crank in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4. Such move ment or the bell crank 49 causes the arm 52 thereo-l to move to a position where it will engage notch 53 in theguard key 21, when the guard key is in place in thel key post 39 and is in position relative to the casingV 13 so that it can be withdrawn 'from thelock.
The portion 55 o't the casing 18 which holds 57 is provided in the portion 58 of the cas ing which holds the key post 28 in' place in the casing so as to make it necessaryv to have the key post28 in certain position I (the position shown in Figs. 2 and 8 in the drawings) before the main key 19 can be inserted or withdrawn from the lock.l In the case of the key post 39 the' notch 5G in the casing is so located that when the guard key 21 is inserted in the key post or when the guard key is in place in the key post rand is in position to be withdrawn therefrom andthe main key 19 is in place in key post 28 the notch 53 is in position to be engaged by the arm 52 or' bell crank49. The end of the guard key 21 has a beveled portion 59 which engages the arm 52, oi? bell crank when the guard key 21 is being placed in the understood how the mechanism and arrangement vjust described positively prevent removal ot the guard key 21 from the lock Awhile any portion of the main key 19 is lin thekey post 28. As soon as the mainy key 19 is completely removed trom the lock or inA soon as the main key' 19 is moved so that its back edge 43 no longer engages the tumblcr 42 the spring 46 causes the tumbler 42 to be moved into the slot 27 in the `key post 2S and causes the bell crank 49 to be moved so that the arm 52 thereotno longer is in position to engage the notch 53 in the guard key 21, that is, the tumbler 42 and bell crank 49 are in the position shown in Fig. 2. llllith the arm `52 ot the bell crank 49 thus moved so that it no longer engages the notch in the guard key 21 it is possible to remove the guard key from thelock by merely withdrawing it therefrom.
ln order to be able to throw the bolt 14, by the main key 19 without the useot the guard key 21 when the door 1() open, in order that the door may be closed and locked, a guard bolt 17 is provided in the lock. rlhe guard bolt 17 is arranged adjacent to one end ot the bolt 14 and is arranged to co-operate with the keeper 15 so that it moves to its out position, as shown in lli 7 only when the door 10 is open. When theV door is in the closed position the keeper 15 engages the guard bolt 17, as shown in Fig. Q, and thereby prevents its complete outward movement. Then the door is open, however, the guard bolt is i'reeto move to its outermost position (when the bolt 14 is in its outermost position). projection 60V is provided on the tail piece `61 ofthe `guard bolt 17 so that it will be engaged by the inner end 62 ot the bolt 14 and thereby cause the bolt 17 to be withdrawn or moved into the casing 13 with the main bolt14. ai suit able spring` 64 is arranged inconnection with the tail piece 61 ot the guard bolt 17 so as to tend atl all times to press or more the Iguard bolt to its out or thrown position and sutiicient play provided. between the inner end 62 ot the bolt 14 and the projection o() so that when the door 10 is open and the two bolts are in their out position the bolt v14 will be moved a short distanceinwardly before the projection 6() is engaged by the end GQ ot the bolt 14 to move the guard bolt 17. it. suitable lug 65 is provided on the tail piece G1 oit the guardy bolt 17 so as to engage lug;` 66 which extends from the arm 40 ot tumbler 2U so as to move the arm 40 and theret'ore the tumbler 20 to its actuated position when the guard bolt 17 is in its out position or when the door 10 is open. The spring' 64 in. connection with the` tail piece (31 is stronger than spring' Qtin connection with tumbler 20 thereby causing the tumbler to be moved to the position shown in Fig. 7, when the door is open so that the bolt 17 is allowed to move to its outermost position. lt will be` particularly noted however, in Fin: Q, that when the bolt 17 is in engagemem; with the keeper 15 the lug 65 does not engage the lug` 66 and therefore does not ac'- tuate or move the tumbler 20 so that the to actuate the tumbler U.

Having described a preferred 'term of our invention we do not wish to limit ourselve to the specific" details hereinabove set forth but wish to reserve to ourselves any changes` or modiiications that may appear to those skilled in the art or tall within the scope ot' the following claims.
Having' described a invention, we claim:
`1. ln a lock of the character described, a bolt adapted tov be operated jointly by two keys, and means to prevent withdrawal ci, one ot the .keys 'from the lock while the other key is in the lock,
2. .ln a lock of the character described. a bolt adapted to be retracted by simultaneous operation ot two keys, and means to prevent withdrawal of one oi" the keys from the lock while the other key is in the lock.
` 3. ln a lock of the character described-a preferred form of our ybolt adapted to be retracted by simultaneous operation of two keys, separate key posts `tor said keys, and means to prevent withdrawal of one of the keys from its key post until the otlierkey is completely removed from. its key post. j

6. In a lock, a bolt adapted to'be retracted by simultaneous operation or' two keys, and means to prevent removal of one of the keys from thelock while the other key is in the lock, the ylast mentioned key being adapted to be withdrawn from the lock only when lthe bolt is in itsthrown position.
7. In a lock, a bolt adapted to co-operate with a keeper, and be retracted by simultaneous operation of two keys when it is in engagement with the keeper, and be retracted by-operation ofone key when it is out of engagement with the keeper, and means in the lock to prevent withdrawal of one of the keys from the lock until the other key is withdrawn from the lock.
8. In a lock, a bolt adapted to co-operate with a keeper, and be retracted by simultaneous operation of two keys when it is in engagement with the keeper, and be retracted by operation oit one key when it is out of engagement with the keeper, andy means in the lockto prevent withdrawal of one ofthe keys from the lock until the other key is withdrawn from the lock, regardlesso its operative condition. y y y 9. In combination with a keeper, a door lock, the door lock comprising a bolt, a plurality of tumblers, the tumblers, being adapt-A ed to be `actuated by two keys to allow retraction of the bolt when the door is closed, each key actuating diii'erent tumblers, and
rmeans coeoperating with the keeper to act in place of one of the keys when the door is open.
10. In vcombination with a keeper, a door lock, the door lock comprising a bolt, a plurality of tumblers, the tumblers being adapted to be actuated by two keys when the door is closed, each key actuating different tumblers, means co-operating with the keeper to act in place of one'otl the keys when the door is open, and means actuated by one yof the keys to preventremoval of the other key from the lock while the key which actuates said means is in the lock.
11. In combination with a keeper, a door lock, the door lock comprising bolt and a setvoi' tumblers, the tumblers being adapted to be actuated by two keys when the door is closed, each key actuating different tumr blers, means co-operating with the keeper to act in place of one of thel keys when the door is open, thereby allowing retraction of the bolt by onenkey, and means actuated by the lastmentioned key to prevent removal of the other key from the lock until the said last mentioned key is completely withdrawn from the lock and regardless of the operative condition of the lock.
12. In a look of the character described,
a bolt adapted to be operated jointly by two vvent withdrawal of one of the keys from the lock, andy a member moved by the other key when it is in thev lock to actuate the4 rst mentioned member.
15. In a lock or" the character described, a bolt adapted to be operated jointly by two keys, an arm adapted to be actuated to prevent withdrawal of one of the keys from` the lock, means r'or normally holding the arm out of the actuated position, and a member moved by the other key when it is in the lock to actuate the arm.
16. In a lock of the character described, a bolt adapted to be operated jointly by two keys, and a lever mechanism actuated 'by one of the keys to hold the other key in the lock while said iirst mentioned key isin the lock. 17. In a lock of the character described,
a bolt adapted to be operated by joint operation of two keys at different parts of the lock, and means for preventing` removal of one of the keys from the lockwhile the other key is in the lock. l j
18. In combination with a keeper, a door lock,` the door lock comprising a bolt, a plurality of tumblers, the tumblers being adapted to be actuated by two keys to allow retraction oi the bolt when the door is closed, each key actuating different tumblers, and a bolt cooperating with thekeeper yto act in place of one of the keys when the door is open.
19. In combination with a keeper, a doorl lock, the door lock comprising a bolt, a plurality oiu tumblers, the tumblers being adapted to be actuated' by two keys to allow retraction of the bolt when the door is closed, each key actuating different tumblers, said means comprising a guard bolt adapted to act in place of one of the keys when completely extended and adapted to be prevented from becoming thus extended by the keeper when the door is closed.
20. In combination, a door, a keeper, a bolt adapted to engage the keeper, and means for operating the bolt requiring two keys for actuation when the door is closed and one key when the door is open. i
21. In combination, a door, a keeper, a bolt adapted to engage the keeper, and means for retracting the bolt requiring the simultaneous operation of two keys ork actuation when the door is closed and only one key when the door is open.
22. In combination, a door, a keeper, a bolt adapted to engage the keeper, and means for operating the bolt requiring two keys t'or actuation when the door is closed and one key when the door is open, said means comprising tumblers adapted to be actuated by the keys to allow movement of the bolt, and a member adapted to act in place of one of the keys when the door is open. t
In a lock a bolt adapted to be retracted by the joint action of two keys, a key post for one of the keys adapted to allow withdrawal of the key only when in a certain position, and a movable member actuated when the other key is in the lock to prevent withdrawal of the first mentioned key from the lock.
24. In a lock of the character described, a bolt adaptedto be operated by the joint action of two keys, and means adapted to prevent withdrawal of one of lthe keys from the lock when the other key `is in the lock and allow placement of the rst mentioned key in the lock at any time.
25. In a lock of the character described a bolt adapted to be operated by the joint action of two keys, a keeper adapted to be engaged by the bolt, and mechanism operated when one of the keys is in the lock to prevent withdrawal of the other key from the lock.
26. In combination, a door, a keeper, a bolt adapted to operatively engage the keeper, a plurality of tumblers controlling the operation of the bolt and adapted to be actuated to allow movement of the bolt by two keys, each key actuating different tum blers, means cooperating with the keeper when the door is closed to act in place of f one of the keys when the door is open, and a member actuated when one of the keys is in the lock to prevent withdrawal of the other key from the lock.
