Abstract
In treating artificial silk with drying oils for the purpose of producing film-like coatings water-soluble non-volatile organic bases such as mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine are incorporated with the artificial silk prior to treatment with the dressing agent in order to counteract the detrimental effect of products formed from the drying oils. The silk is treated with a water solution of the base, e.g. tri-ethanolamine hydro extracted and dried, and then with a solution of linseed oil in benzene. Oils or waxes may be added to the drying oils, e.g. castor oil, lanoline &c. for softening purposes, and in order to avoid too rapid drying anti-oxidants, e.g. naphthols, hydroquinone &c. The drying may also be accelerated by treatment with oxygen, or ozone.
