Abstract
418,845. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., Caxton House, Tothill Street, DOBRULUX, Ltd., 107, New Bond Street, both in London, and ALDINGTON, J. N., c/o Siemens Electric Lamps & Supplies, Ltd., Dock Road, Preston. July 1, 1933, No. 18723. [Class 39 (i).] A cathode glow discharge lamp has symmetrically disposed electrodes spaced apart by thin solid insulation, one of the electrodes being a tapered surface of revolution and having its active surface area at least three, and preferably about eight, times that of the active surface of the other electrode. When the lamp is connected to an alternating source of supply the discharge is caused to oscillate or gyrate over the surface of the larger electrode. In the example shown the domed electrode m, preferably of aluminium, is screwed to a supporting rod d<1> connected to the lead d. An extension b<3> of the pinch supports the electrode o, preferably of iron, which is provided with mica discs p, r<1>, r<2> which leave only the edge and a narrow annulus of the top surface exposed. The leads d, g are provided with an insulating and heat-resisting coating. A series resistance i is included in the lamp. The filling may be neon at a pressure of 10-20 mms. of mercury optionally with small quantities of hydrogen, helium or argon. Specification 383,530 is referred to.
