418,428. Railway or road vehicles. STANIER, W. A., c /o London, Midland, & Scottish Railway Co., Euston, London, PURVES, J., The Gables, Wolverton, Bucking- hamshire, and HENDERSON, P. L., 12, Nunsfield Drive, Derby. May 28, 1934, No. 15807. [Classes 103 (iv) and 108 (i).] In a railway or road vehicle wood pillars of the side-frames are secured in steel boxbrackets of channel or angle form which are welded to a steel sole-bar and/or steel cantrail. As shown in Fig. 1, a rail vehicle comprises steel solebars 2 and steel cantrail 5 connected by wooden pillars 1 provided with steel brackets 3, 6 bolted to the pillar and welded to the solebar and cantrail respectively. The lower bracket 3 is provided with gussets, Fig. 7, and is secured to the pillar by two bolts 4 and the upper bracket which may have gussets is secured by two bolts one of which 7, Fig. 3, is first bolted to the pillar and the head secured to the bracket by welding through a small hole therein. The door pillars are similarly connected by brackets to the solebar and cantrail and steel diagonal tension members 18 are also welded to the solebar and cantrail. Steel carlines 19 are welded to the cantrail and are fitted with wood packing 20 to which the roof sheeting is secured. The end framing is provided with steel corner pillars and gangway pillars welded to the headstock and arch. Timber pillars with bottom brackets and a skeleton wood framing are also provided for attachment of the steel end panels.
