Abstract

606,727. Railway vehicles. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G. Jan. 17, 1946, No. 1617. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1945. [Class 103 (vi)] A vehicle is provided with a separate end underframe and comprises a centre sill of box-section, the vertical walls of which are split in a horizontal plane and the lower section on each side of the split is splayed outwards towards the buffer beam, a plate bridging the edges of the split sections to form a roof for an openbottom box for a coupler. The end underframe comprises a centre sill 20, having vertically arranged channels 25, Figs. 1, 3 with top and bottom plates 32, 34, the plates terminating on the inboard side of the bolster 21 in a bulkhead 31 against which the end of the body centre sill 69 abuts, the sides of the sill 69, Fig. 6, nesting between the sides 25 of the end underframe sill to which they are secured by rivets 70. A transverse beam 71, Fig. 1, is attached to the sill 69 and forms an abutment at 28 for the inboard end of the centre sill channels 25. The bolster beam 21, Fig. 7, comprises side plates 36 welded to upper and lower plates 33, 35, the outer ends being closed by a plate to which the body side posts 42 are welded. The side plates 36 cross the centre sill 20 by means of web plates 39 welded between the side channels 25 to form a box section for the housing 37 of the bogie pivot, the side channels being strengthened by plates 38 connected at one end to the bulkhead 31 and at the other to a bulkhead 43. Beyond the bulkhead 43 is another bulkhead 44 which forms an abutment for the draft gear 65. At this point the centre sill is provided with plate 51, Figs. 3, 5, 8, intermediate the upper and lower plates 32, 34 which extends forwardly to an end transverse beam 23, the parts of the side channels 25 below the intermediate plate 51 being splayed at 48 to permit the coupler head 66 to swing laterally. Collision posts 63 and bumper bar 64 surround the ends of the splayed portion 48 and a bridge plate 68, Fig. 8, closes the bottom of the centre sill under the draft and buffing gear 65.
