Abstract
416,718. High-speed spinning, doubling, and twisting machines. FERRANTI, G. R. Z. DE, (Executrix of FERRANTI, S. Z. DE), Wood Green Farm, Upper Basildon, Pangbourne, Berkshire. Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4341. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii).] In machines for spinning, doubling, and twisting at high speed, especially machines of the kind first described in Specification 18047 /03, [Class 120], the spindle apparatus comprises an outer running tube 27, Fig. 3, carrying the bobbin and provided with a brake drum 29, and an intermediate bearing tube 30 resiliently supported on a dead spindle 31 and provided with a thrust bearing at the top for the running tube. The invention is described as applied to Ferranti machines, such as described in Specifications 18047/03, 18260/04, or 24941/06, [all in Class 120]. The intermediate tube 30 is supported on the dead spindle by resilient cages 43, 59, comprising rings 44, 45, Fig. 8, connected by springs 46, and with a spring damping-device 47 comprising a split ring 51, Fig. 10, carried by washers 49, 50 supported by resilient washers 54, 57 and a spring 56. The damping-device is situated approximately midway of the tube 30, but the position is not material. The tube 30 is provided with a graphite plug 34 which is bored centrally to receive a valve pin 33 at the top of the running tube and is seated on a swivelling air-connecting piece 39 on the dead spindle, the valve 33 permitting air to pass to lift the running tube to an extent determined by the exposure of a leakage-hole in the tube. The tubes are formed of electrodeposited copper and the tube 30 is provided with carbon bearing surfaces for the tube 27. The brake drum 29 is formed of brass and is engaged by a band 61, Fig. 15, carried by a pivoted bracket 62 pressed by a bracket under control of a spring coiled around its pivot. An aneroid device 73 is provided normally to withhold the spring bracket from the bracket 62, but when air is shut off from the machine the aneroid collapses and the brake band 61 is strongly applied. The valve of the aneroid is connected with a wire 142 engaged by the yarn so that the brake is also applied when the yarn breaks or the supply fails. The brake may also be removed by a thumbpiece. The brake-band is subsidiarly controlled by a spring 69, when the spring bracket is withheld by the aneroid, so as to adjust the drag, a lever 66, engaged with a slot 71 in the control lever of the spring 69, being moved by a ramp 70 on a rod which follows the movements of the spindle rail and, in addition, has a relative horizontal movement so as to vary the braking effect in such manner that during the complete filling of the bobbin the drag on the bobbin is at first increased gradually until the bottom is wound and is then gradually decreased. The bobbin consists of an electrodeposited copper tube and is driven by the tube 27 by means of slotted steel rings 74, 75. Specifications 416,717 and 416,719 also are referred to.
