Abstract

416,669. Power-generating systems. SENTINEL WAGGON WORKS, Ltd., 20, Iddlesleigh House, Caxton Street, London, and DOBLE, A., Alta Vista, Ridgebourne Road, Shrewsbury. March 11, 1933, No. 7449. [Class 122 (iii).] In a compound or multiple-expansion steam engine, the primary steam from the generator is used for reheating the receiver steam, and a thermostat is used to control the temperature of the primary steam by regulating the feedwater supply. The temperature of the receiversteam is also maintained under the control of the thermostat by passing the primary steam to the thermostat after it has reheated the receiver steam. In the construction shown suitable for a motor-road vehicle, the generator 10 is supplied with feed - water through a pipe 11, and steam to the H.P. cylinder is fed through a pipe 12. The H.P. exhaust passes to a helical tube 17 in the generator 10, and thence to the L.P. cylinder through pipe 18. The generator comprises spiral water tubes 22, 23 and steam-tubes 24, 25. The tubes 24, 25, and 17 constitute a triple helix and are welded together internally. The lower end of the steam tube 24 is connected to the water tube 23, and the upper end to a throttle valve casing 26. The tube 25 is connected to the casing 26 and at its lower end is connected to the inlet of a thermostat tube 27 the outlet of which is connected to the pipe 12. The thermostat rod, through a control box 28, controls the feed-water supply and also, if desired, the burner 29 or furnace. The thermostat may be constructed as described in Specification 416,321, [Group XIII]. In a modification the steam between the stages of a triple-expansion engine is heated in receivers through which main steam is passed through helixes therein from which it is returned to the generator. The heating pipes are interposed in the main circulatory path of the generator tubing before the thermostat is reached as described in Specification 394,713, [Group XIII]. In a further modification, a generator of the horizontal kind is used. Primary steam passes through the two compartments of a double reheater, returns through a throttle valve, and re-enters the generator to pass through a tube containing a thermostat before passing to the engine. In constructions of the kind shown in Fig. 1 with three or more cylinders, two or more tubes 17 are provided. The thermostat tube 27 may be interposed in the primary-steam circuit immediately before the throttle valve 26.
