[Class 46.] In apparatus for separating liquid fuel from solid or liquid substances of higher density, the liquid to be treated is passed through filter elements 18, Fig. 1, 38, Fig. 2, which extend between upper and lower supports and are spaced by the connection of one end of the elements in series to the steps or gradations 19, Fig. 1, 34, Fig. 2, of one of the supports, and these elements are disposed above a sump filled with a float and valve providing for the timeto-time release of heavy liquid and trapped particles. The apparatus may be fitted in association with a tank 1, Fig. 1, from which the liquid is allowed to pass by raising, by a hand-wheel 10, a dome 9. The coarser particles are retained by a filter 29, and the liquid then descends through openings 6, 30 to the sump 22, rises by the edge of the stepped support and escapes by the pipe 21. The float 26 has a valve 25. In Fig. 2, the liquid enters the apparatus by the pipe connection 36 and may pass through a filter 37 on its way to the elements 38 and delivery opening 31. The float 43 in the sump 48 first rises freely upon a stem 41 but on reaching a stop 41<1> the float lifts the stem and opens a needle valve 46<1>.
