Abstract

415,470. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., Hebburn-on- Tyne, and TAYLOUR, H. H., 15, Portland Terrace, Jesmond, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Feb. 27, 1933, No. 5884. [Class 39 (i).] Deionizing surfaces which are arranged in the neighbourhood of the cathode and extend from the sides towards the centre thereof are so shaped that their deionizing effect is negligible at the centre and increases towards the sides thereof. Radial tapered plates D are secured through lugs and conducting rings E, E<1> to a quartz guide C which dips into the cathode mercury A. The plates may be given a potential with respect to the cathode or the casing and may contain internal ducts through which a cooling fluid is adapted to circulate. In a modification, the plates are curved and arranged parallel to one another so that the distance between any pair of plates is uniform throughout their length. The rectifier may be provided with an anode grid as described in Specification 415,469 and may be used as an inverter.
