Abstract

412,825. Valve gear. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FEDDEN, A. H. R., Filton House, Bristol. Oct. 31, 1933, No. 30254. [Class 7 (vi).] In mechanism for imparting to the sleeve valves of internal-combustion or other engines a combined reciprocating and oscillating motion by means of a crank or eccentric engaging a coupling-member connected to the sleeve by a trunnion parallel to the sleeve axis, the coupling- member is formed with both upwardly and downwardly extending trunnions, at the base of each of which are thrust bearing surfaces. Figs. 1 and 2 show the crank pin 11 of the valve shaft engaging a bearing liner 12 in a coupling- member 14, which is formed with trunnions 15 engaging caps 16 and 17 secured by bolts 18 to ribs 19 on the sleeve valve. In order to retain the lower cap 17 and the bolts when the upper nuts 27 are removed for dismantling, a further cap 22, also held by the bolts, is attached to the lower trunnion 15 by a T-shaped rivet 23, the head of which can only be removed through a slot in the bottom of the trunnion when the cap 22 has been unbolted and turned through 90‹. In a modification, the lower cap is held to the trunnion by a split ring engaging a groove in the trunnion, and the upper nuts are locked in position and removed as described in Specification 416,589. The coupling-member 14 may be made entirely of bearing metal, such as aluminium bronze, the liner 12 being then omitted. Specification 3464/13, [Class 7 (vi)], also is referred to.
