Abstract
In a method of surface hardening articles for example golf balls, composed wholly or partly of guttapercha, the surface is subjected to the action of a water decomposable compound comprising a halogen element in combination with a non-metallic element other than sulphur or boron. Preferably compounds of the non-metallic elements of the nitrogen and oxygen groups of the periodic table are used. The halogen element may be employed in chemical combination with two or more non-metallic elements, one of which may be oxygen and which may include sulphur. Free halogen, for example excess chlorine may be present. Suitable halogen compounds are selenium chloride, selenium oxychloride or thionyl chloride or nitrosylchloride or phosphorous oxychloride, such compounds preferably being applied in solution, the article being subsequently washed with a liquid containing a substance of a reducing character. Playing-balls treated as described above, acquire a tough surface which is capable of being polished and do not require painting. The ball assumes a white, red or other coloured surface according to the treatment adopted.
