Abstract

409,359. Tip - up seats; frames. GREENE, A. C., 6, Trenmar Gardens, Willesden, and THEOBALDS, V. F., 77, Wrottesley Road, Harlesden, both in London. Oct. 29, 1932, Nos. 30381/32 and 13371/33. [Class 52 (ii).] The frame construction of a bench unit of individual tip-up seats comprises a stamped sheet metal back member b extending the whole length of the unit and adapted for the removable mounting of individual upholstery backs s. Sheet metal arm rests y are attached to the back b between the seats and one or more sheet metal leg members d are attached to each unit. In Fig. 1 the upholstery backs s and arm rest cushions w are on mounts t and x respectively which are secured to the back and arm rest members respectively by screws u. Each leg member has a turned out portion f with strengthening webs g and a bracing tie-rod m connects them together and functions as a foot rest. The seats comprise rectangular tray - like bases j mounted on another tie-rod o and the upholstered parts are fitted into the trays and secured by screws. In modified upholstery attachments (not shown) the cushions have lip parts or flanges guided in corresponding parts on the frame, and the mounts for the back or seat cushion may be of wire mesh. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the back member is made flat and is provided with inturned flanges 70, 80. The leg member d is formed of a separate portion and is pivoted on the tie-rod o by means of the slot 9, and holes 10 can be engaged by a bolt 11 passing through the adjoining arm rest to give different settings. The seats also comprise a tray-like base with lip parts 16 and the upholstery members are provided with corresponding parts and low springs so that they can be sprung into position and retained. The back upholstered member is similarly provided with a bow spring at one edge and can be sprung under the lip parts 21 formed on the flanges 70. A gangway light 26 may be mounted in the end leg member.
