which it appertains to make and use the -0ur invention consists in the novel fea tures hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which illustrates'one form iirwhich we have con' templated embodying our, invention, and i said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
The object of our invention is to provide a convertible piece of furniture usable as a settee or sofa in the day tiniefa'nd as a bed at night. In carrying out ourinveiition we employ a spring section preferably/of the box spring type, which is permanently placed and supported in the name of the settee bed and forms a seat cushion when the device is used as a'settee. A mattressjis also provided and is, together with all the neces; sary bed clothing secured to theback of frame provided with yielding supporting material stretched across it iii front of the mattress, this frame being supported 11113;
vertically inclined position when the device is used as a settee and forming a'comfor'table back for the same, said frame being so connected with the base portion of the device, that it may be brought into horizontal position upon the spring section with the mat tress and bed clothes uppermost,'and in'such position is supported directly by thespring f section in thesame manner that the mattress would be supported in an ordinary bed In carrying out our invention, we preferably provide the base section atqopposite ends with a slotted guide toeng'age'. trunnions at the lower edge of the back f-raine,.
said slotted guides having at their rear ends I vertically disposed portions forming a co1 1-- finuiationofthe main slot therein, to permit of the free vertical movement-of the back frame and mattress upon the upper surface a V of the'spring section. Our invention also iii J HoDIseludes certain detailsyof constructionand combination of partshereinafter-fully .dc-J- scribed and particularly pointed out in 0.12111118.
In" the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a setteebed embodying our invention, arranged as aj settee for use in the day time Fig. 2 represents a similar View, partly in elevatiomshowing the back frame and mattressin horizontal position and the parts arranged as a bed for use at night. 7
Fig. 3 is a detail viewof thefbaclr frame with the frontcover removed therefrom,
Fig; 4 is a detail viewofone of the slotted guide plates which may beconvenientlyused 111 connectionw'ith our improved bed scttee.

which is preferably inthe form of a rec-- tangular frameprovided with'end portions, 2, PI'OJGCtlIlgabove the level ofthe main portion of the-frame and supported upon.
suitable legs indicated a t 3.:- Vi e alsoprefer to provide the main-fi'amewitha vertically disposed back portion, 1 indicated at ,4.
5 represents the horizontal spring' section 1 which is preferably made in the formof, a
usual box spring and is setinto the base frame 1,-in the usual mannerofbox springs, and is provided, on its upper face vwith a covering'indicated'at 6, which inay be of any suitable material; ,Tl'iis cover. may beef ordinary ticking,'ii which case a 'niore or less ornamental cover may be thrown overit in theday time, but we prefer to cover he top of the spring with some sort of furniture covering, i-as chintz or other upholstering inateriahfleather, etc, so that the'ex posed portion forward of the-back will pre sent a pleasing appearance andthespring section may be supplied 1 with, padding, in-
dicated at 7, between the coiled springand the cover,v 6,"in the usualand wellknown manner, 8 representsthe back frame which ispreferably madepf metal, although it ni'ay be made ofwood, if preferred. In vany event, it is provided .at itslower edge and at each end with" a projecting stud or trunnion, 9, which may, if desired, be provided with an anti-friction rolleigalthougli this is not believed to be necessary. As this frame is designed to constitute the back, of the device when used asa settee, itlwill be provided with suitable nat-erial to form aiyieldings'upport fortheback, and we prefertO provide .it with cross strapsor strips ofweb bing indicated at 10,111 a well known way,
over which is placed a permanent coverin 11, which will preferably be of the same material as the covering, 6. The frame, 8, is of rectangular form and is of substan-. 1 tlally the same size and shape as the exterlor 'frameof the spring section,5. For the purpose of supporting the back frame in a substantially'vertic'al position or" vertically inclinedposition"duringthe day, and permitting it to be qnicklyiand easily shifted into uhorizontal position at'night, we 'prefe'rto provide'the endipieces, 2, of the base, with horizontal, slotted portions extending from the back edge thereof in a hor zontal direction forwardly, and having a portion at the back vedge"extending vertically below the level of the main; portion of the slot. ,As' the end portion of the bed-will ordinarily be made of wood, we find it "convenient to plate, one of which isshown in detail in 5' Fig. 4. This plate, indicated at 12, has
form the slot referred to in a'metal'guide depending portionindicatedat 13, atjits' rear end, and is provided with a horizontal slot, 14, entendingithroughthe main body, 12, and continuing "in a vertical slot, 15', formed int-he depending portion, 13, the said plate being provided with suitable screw holes, 16,
whichit may be attached to the end po-r-' the end plate is v The length v,tions, 2. a We prefer to set these plates, 12,
intothe end portions, 2, so that theouter surface of the plate is'fl'ush' with the'inner surface of the end piece. and the position of clearly indicated'infFigs'. l tinde I 13 of the section, 12, of the end plate and'the slot, 14, therein, will depend somewhat upon whether the bed is a single andthis mattress is'supported in place in rear of the back frame by suitable straps, one of whichis indicated "at 1.8 in Figfll';
There may 'befone, two or more of these 'strapsfemployed and they may be fastened to the back frame at its top, and'b'ottom poi? tions, and their'meeting portions secured detachably as by a buckle, indicated at19, or other suitablefastening, or they may be entirely separate from the baclpframe and 'merelyplace-d around thesame at suitable intervalstransversely thereof, to hold the mattress and thebedclothes' in operative relations to and inre'ar of thebackframe.
; It will ,be' understood that'whe'n the de-' yice is-inuse thebe'd will befully made up providing upon the mattress the usual sheets, blankets, cover'let, 1 etc. which are made up in thexusual manner and tucked beneaththe mattress exactly as in making up an ordinary bed, so that when the back frame and accompanyingmattress and bed.- ding is placed in a horizontal position, the bed is in condition for immediate use. During the day time, the back frame occupies the position shown in Fig. '1, the studs or tru'nnions, 9,'being-pulled. forward to the forward ends of the slots, '14,14, and the upperedge of the bedding resting'zwainst' the back, a, of the base'section. In this position the device forms'a comfortable settee, the forward part of the spring section, 5, to ming a cushionedseat, and the flexible webbing, 10, of the back reinforced by the mattress, providing a yieldingand comfortable back. When it is desired to use the de vice as a bed, thelower end of'the back frame is pushed rearwardly, the trunnions, 9, sliding in the horizontal slots, 14, until they reach the vertical portion of the slots indicated at 1 5, the upper edge of the back iframe' being drawn over forwardly and the back frame with its mattress and bedding- ,being'swung downward upon the'hoX spring section, 5, as indicated inFig. 2; -l5y looseni-ng the-straps, 18, a' very satisfactory and comfortable bed isprovided, and it will he noted that the vertical slots, 15, of theslotted guide plates,'will permit vertical movement of the entire backfliram'e with its mattress and bedding upon the box spring to accommodate the position and weight of the 7 person occupying the bed, so that the mattress" is supported by'thebox spring as truly asif the back frame were not present and all the elasticity of the boxspring section i's'availabl'ef This would not'be so if the guide slots, 14,were not provided with'the vertical portions, 15. y
We also-prefer to provide a long wood or other'suitable'material indicated at 20, hinged to the upper edge of thebackportion, 4, whichcan be swung forwardly so as to conceal the u'pper'edge of the mattress and bedding, in the 'day time when the device is used as a settee, and we also prefer to p'rovide'eaclr of the end pieces, 2, ofthe base frame, with side pieces, 21, which constrip of i ceal' the e nd portions of the back frame and mattress and bedding when'the, device is used as a; settee, and these side pieces, 21, "are convement'ly provided with forwardlv extending arm portions indicated at 22, which may beof anydesired character-and may be made more or less ornamental, as
preferred. It will be seen that in converting the device from a 'settee into a bed, no part isremoved, but the back frame, matties sand 7 l bedding are moved backward anchthcn swungintoa horizontal position uponthe'. 136
spring section, 5, VVhenthe bed ifs-made up as'in the morning, it is made up in the same manner as an ordinary bed, all the parts',in'- cluding the mattress and bedding, being see cured to the back frame-and said frame then swung into vertical position to constitute the back of the settee. It is also to be noted that the spring s permanently supported 1n.- the base of the device and serves as a cushion seat in the day time and a spring for the bed at night, which makes it unnecessary to raise and lower a heavy spring section in converting the device from a settee into a bed and vice versa.
'lhecoristruction isextremely simple and practical and can beconveniently and inexpensively 'manufactured, and provides a useful and desirable device for the purposes I set forth.
