HEAD-REST.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB DENZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strasburg, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in head rests for attachment to chairs having high backs and which may also be used on the backs of railway car seats and in analogous ways. a

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which may be readily applied to and removed from a chair or seat, which when removed may be compactly folded and which when applied to the chair will support the head and insure comfort to-the user.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved head rest in its open position ready for use; Fig. 2 is a front view of the device folded; Fig. 3 is a rear view; Fig. 4: is a sectional View taken on the plane indicated by the line 44 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 5' is a perspective view of the framework of the device, the cushions and the covering being removed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 denotes the body portion of the device which is preferably made substantially U- shaped and from heavy leather, light sheet metal or any analogous material that is somewhat flexible. This body or plate 1 is adapted to be placed on the upper portion of the back of a chair, seat, or the like and while it may be attached in any suitable manner, I preferably employ a fastenlng and or strap made in two

5 and so constructed as to project forwardly from the lower extremities of the side portions or arms 6 and to be foldable inwardly and upwardly on top of the folded side rests 7. The upper head rest 8 is merely a pad of cushioning material such as hair, cotton, fiber or the like secured to the body plate in any suitable manner. The two side rests 7 are also in the form of substantially rectangular pads composed of similar material and arranged on a supporting frame consisting of a U-shaped member 10 and cross connecting members 11. The member 10 is preferably formed from a heavy piece of wire or metal rod while the connecting members 11 are made of lighter wire or wires and have the cushioning material arranged upon them, the cushioning material being, of course, in closed by a casing of fabric, leather or the like. The extremities of the wire forming the member 10 project from the pad or rest 7 and are pivoted at 12 in the bifurcated outer ends of posts 13 projecting forwardly from the body plate 1 and having their rear ends secured in the latter, as shown at 14:, or in any other suitable manner. tremities of the part 10 are reduced and made angular in shape, as shown at 15, so as to provide stop shoulders to engage the bottom port-ions of the rests in the outer ends of the posts or studs 13 and thereby limit the swinging movement of the side rests. This construction of these pivotal connections permits the head rests to swing from their folded posit-ion shown in Fig. 2 in which they are parallel with the body plate to their open position shown in Fig. 1 and in which they project forwardly from and at right angles to the body plate. These side rests being constructed of yieldable and somewhat resilient material give sufiiciently to insure comfort to the person who uses the device.

The lower or neck rest 9 has a Ushaped frame member 16 similar to the member 10 of one of the side rests and similarly covered with padding or cushioning material. The

The latter is detachably engaged with a socket in the outer end of a post 19 pro 'ecting forwardly from one side portion ,6 o the body plate and having its other end suitably fixed or anchored to said plate. The shouldered hinge lug 17 is pivoted at 20 in the bifurcated outer end of a post 21, which latter is rotatably mounted in a tubular bearing 22 which projects forwardl, from the opposite side portion 6 of the body plate. Owing to the rotatable or swiveled mounting of the post 21, it will be seen that the lower or neck rest 9 may be swung laterally after its pin or portion 18 has been disengaged from the socket bearing post 19, and that this construction enables said rest 9 to be more readily moved from its folded position to its open position and vice versa. The pin or portion 18 of the frame member 16 is adapted to be sprung into and out of the socket in post 19, by reason of the flexibility of the plate or body 1, the latter being made from heavy leather or light sheet metal, as above explained.

In order to prevent the body plate 1 from scratching or marring the polished surface a of a chair or Wearing an upholstered surface against which it may be placed, I preferably provide on the rear face of the body plate five pads or cushions which are indicated by the numeral 23 and which are similar in construction to the upper head rest 8.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it is thought i that the construction, use and advantages of the invention will be readily understood. It may be noted, however, that the peculiar arrangement of the upper and lower and side pads or rests causes the head to be supported at all points so as to insure comfort to the user. Furthermore, the peculiar construction of the device enables it to be compactly folded when not in use, to be readily applied to and removed from various kinds of chairs and enables it to be produced at a comparatively small cost.

While I have shown and described in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not Wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

If desired, the head rest instead of being applied to a chair or seat may be applied to the person by passing the strap 2 downwardly over the front of the right shoulder, then under the right arm, then across the back under the left arm, and then upwardly so that it may be engaged with the buckle 4 on the other strap 3 and buckled at the front and adjacent the left shoulder.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a body, head rests thereon, a neck rest, a swiveled connection between one end of said neck rest and the body, and a detachable connection between the other end of said head rest and the body.

2. A device of the character described comprising a body, head rests thereon, a neck rest, a member swiveled on the body,

a hinged connection between said swiveled member and one endof the neck rest and a detachable pin and socket connection between the other end of said neck rest and the body.
