Abstract

408,849. Thermally-actuated valves. HAMMOND, M. C., 78, Main Street, Bradford, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. July 28, 1933, No. 21266. [Class 135.] A pair of thermal elements 36, 40, the former being affected by the temperature of a bearing and the latter by the atmospheric temperature act upon a valve 31 to control the flow of lubricant. One end of the element 36 is connected to a drum 18 and the other end terminates in an arm 37 which is connected by a link 48 to a lever 47 pivoted at 46. A part of the lever 47 forms a drum 38 to which one end of the member 40 is secured. The free end 41 of the member 40 forks a nut 42 screwed upon the stem 32 of the valve 31. The members 36, 18, and 40, 38, are filled with glycerine or the like and sodium chloride or the like respectively. In operation the movement of the member 36 due to a rise in the temperature of the bearing 26 rocks the lever 47 and tends to open the valve 31. Expansion of the member 40 due to a rise in the atmospheric temperature tends to close the valve. The drums 18, 38, are co-ordinated so that at high temperatures the valve opening is less than at low temperatures. The valve 31 is supplied from a lubricant well 13 which is fed from a reservoir 14 on the bird-fountain principle. The reservoir 14 has a level gauge 17 and the valve delivers to a sight-feed tube 28.
