Abstract

407,998. Sound reproducing and transmitting devices. SWIFT, LEVICK, & SONS, Ltd., HORSBURGH, G. D. L., and TETLEY, F. W., Clarence Steel Works, Sheffield. Sept. 29, 1932, No. 27106. [Class 40 (iv).] A magnet with a narrow air-gap, such as is employed in sound reproducing or transmitting apparatus, is provided with a pole-piece of two or more portions separate from the body of the magnet, so that by suitable choice of the shape and materials of the portions of the pole-piece the flux-density in the air-gap can be regulated without altering the body of the magnet. The Figure shows a magnet with a body formed of a bar 5 with upturned ends 6, 7 and a mild steel plate 8 forming the outer pole-piece. The inner polepiece is formed of two portions 11, 12 secured to each other and to the body of the magnet by a screw 13. The portion 12 may be made of mild steel or soft iron and the portion 11 of magnet steel. The portion 11 may be rectangular to give a greater surface of contact with the body of the magnet.
