[Class 146 (iii).] A propelling pencil comprises a lead-holding tip to which a lead of polyhedral crosssection is guided by a guide tube which is enlarged in its middle part to permit the lead to adjust itself to enter the tip, and constricted at its rear end to a bore which prevents rotation of the lead passing therethrough. The pencil comprises a guide tube 22, Fig. 1, fixed to a tip body 21 and rotatable in a barrel 20. The top of the guide tube is swaged down to an almost square crosssection, and split at 24c, so that, as shown in Fig. 5, it firmly grips a polyhedral lead 10, and prevents it from rotating. The empty spaces left at the corner between tip and lead permit the use of an oversize lead and allow the escape of dust shaved from the lead. The flat sides 25 of the tip bore disappear gradually into the circular portion of the tube, thus forming guide surfaces for the lead entering the tip. A screwthreaded plunger 27 is provided with a sphere 28 riding in grooves 29 in the barrel, and is adapted to be led forward by co-operation with screw threads 26<a> on a swaged-in portion 26 of the guide tube. The portion 26 also acts as a form and size gauge for leads, which are introduced from the rear after withdrawal of the plunger. In a modified construction the guide surfaces extending upwards from the tip may be of a spiral form.
